STYLE RESOLUTIONS FOR 2014

If you read my last post, you'll understand I don't believe in 'over-egging' the pudding when it comes to New Year's resolutions.  What I mean is, don't overstate or overstretch what you think you 'should' do, because you quite simply won't do it and are just setting yourself up for a fall.

Instead, it's about setting yourself small, achievable objectives that will start to move you towards a bigger change anyway.  It's the same when it comes to your wardrobe.  Make a small change here and there, try one thing new and you'll be amazed at how good it makes you look and feel and how gradually it works to pushing your style and wardrobe forward.

So here are some STYLE RESOLUTIONS FOR 2014 we could all use to update our look and style for the new year...

1. RESOLVE TO SOLVE
Commit to resolving your wardrobe dilemmas once and for all.  Don't just wait for the day of the style emergency to happen, prepare your outfits and looks in advance.  I guarantee with a little forethought and time and energy spent on detoxing, sifting through your wardrobe, working up outfits and looks and creating a 'hit list' of what you actually need will save you time, money and sooo much stress in the long-run!

2. BUY THE BEST YOU CAN AFFORD
I'm all about getting the most for your money and style for less, after all that's the law of chiconomics.  However, I'm the first to say investment pieces hold a key place in your wardrobe.  There are those times when something is worth the investment and will fight for its place on the hanger and earns its rewards in cost per wear.  Items like coats, jeans, a great pair of boots, a staple tote bag or even a classic jacket (leather or blazer are great options) are all pieces that are worth some investment in and opting for the best you can afford.

TAN TOTE - MICHAEL KORS; ALSO TRY ZARA FOR A DESIGNER VERSION AT A FRACTION OF THE COST

TRY A GREAT STAPLE LEATHER JACKET FROM ALL SAINTS, REISS, WHISTLES, MICHAEL KORS IN BIKER STYLE & NEUTRAL SHADE AS GREAT ALTERNATIVE TO BLACK!

3. ADD / REMOVE HEELS STRATEGICALLY
A great pair of heels can take even the simplest of outfits from scruffy day to effortless chic, so vow to switch in a heel into the day now and again and see how it lifts your souls as well as your height.

Tread with heeled caution though...I am a heel girl, but recently I've noticed how much 'cooler' outfits can look with a lower heel, a chunky heeled bootie or even a cute flat.  Sometimes heels can take a look  into well, hooker territory with their inches lift.  There's nothing worse than seeing someone struggling to totter in their heels and she could have looked so much classier in an on trend bootie or kitten heel.  So if you're a towering inferno platform heel girl, try downsizing to something with a little more elegance and class.

4. EDIT YOUR WARDROBE DOWN
I've whittled on about it before, but it is true that we only wear about 20% of our wardrobe.  So what about the other 80%?  It hangs their unworn and unloved and is money on your hangers!  The new year is a great time for a clear-out and a detox on all levels and that includes your wardrobe.

If you've got the time, plan to audit and detox your wardrobe yourself or with a friend.  If not, get the pros in!  Either myself or one of my Stylists will come along and in two hours work our magic as we sift through, showing you what's right and wrong for you, create looks out of your existing wardrobe and tell you where you need to fill in the gaps!

Some tips on editing your wardrobe...ask yourself, have you worn it in the last 6 months?  No, then ditch!  Ask yourself, is it old and a little overwork?  Yes, then ditch and replace!  Ask yourself, are you really going to wear it again/fit in it this year?  No, then ditch!

Simple isn't it!  Ensure you have 10 key pieces at any given time and out of these I guarantee you'll create a hundred more outfits you never even knew you had!  (See my 10 HERO PIECES EVERY WARDROBE NEEDS post for more style help!)  I've put together 6 wardrobe essentials for the new season to kick start your key pieces for outfit building...

5. TURN YOUR FASH INTO CASH
This is something I've discovered this year and can honestly say it's a) fun b) helped me detox my closet more regularly and more simply and c) made me justify new purchases and of course earned me extra cash from my fash!

If it's designer pieces you're looking to sell or replace, try some of the great consignment websites which are shaking up the fashion world, such as The Real Real (USA) or Hardly Ever Worn It (UK).  They'll take a small % and you'll get cash in the bank to replace your old favorite!  Other great sites to sell your wardrobe through are Poshmark, where you can sell high street brands as well as high end.  Even try selling pieces through your social media outlets or online local community re-sale pages.

Not only are you doing something for your bank balance, you're doing a little for the environment too.  If we continue to consume at the rate we are when it comes to clothing, the landfills are going to be so full by 2016 there simply won't be anywhere else to put it.  So get recycling those rags ladies and let's all be a bit more socially responsible.

Until next time
The Chiconomista
xoxo
